CSCOV Executive Director Gracia John Kenyi participated in the East and Central Africa Expert Consultation

Center for Strengthening Community Voices-CSCOV South Sudan representative Gracia John Kenyi participated in the East & Central Africa Expert Consultation, held in Nairobi from 24-25 November 2025, co-organized by the AU PAPS and Impunity Watch (IW). The two-day consultation focused on four core thematic areas, designed to elaborate on how gender, masculinities, and youth experiences intersect with Transitional Justice (TJ) processes:

The consultation established foundational concepts and practices, including deep dives into regional contexts such as the Horn of Africa and South Sudan (Reparative and Transformative Gender Justice).

Participants examined the role of institutional reforms and the gendered dimensions of militarization within the context of the African Union Transitional Justice Policy- AUTJP, including a case study on the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and a deep dive into Disarmament, Demobilization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DDRR) and gender in the Central African Republic.

The discussion provided theoretical frameworks on masculinities in TJ and explored their practical implications, including the intersection of masculinities with women’s political participation and initiatives aimed at promoting positive masculinities, such as in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The inputs gathered from the East & Central Africa consultation will directly inform the drafting of the Guidance Note for the African Union Transitional Justice Policy. The final Guidance Note is intended for validation and official launch in Addis Ababa in 2026
